You go, girl

girltvTwo newly acquainted entrepreneurs want to start putting their insights on video blog posts as a way to help other female entrepreneurs.

Casey Burke,
27, and Whitney Martin, 25, started an interactive video log called StylesGroundUp.TV to advise people, particularly women, who want to start their own business. They’ve opted for an informal, stream-of-consciousness style.

“I think there are a lot of people, specifically women, who have ideas and really want to get into business but don’t know how,” Bunn said.

Martin, who owns the gym Styles Group, is a Virginia Tech graduate. Her workout programs include bride, “momma” and “cougar” boot camps. She is moving into her new location at Libbie and Grove.

Bunn, owns and runs RSVPHere, a site that allows customers to send out invitations or link to paper invitations for events such as weddings and birthday parties, and allows the RSVP to be done online along with info and photo galleries.

Bunn, who started building her business in March 2008, said that one of the most important things for someone looking to start a business is to look for a very specific unfulfilled need.

Her idea came when she had forgotten to RSVP to a friend’s wedding and thought there had to be a better and more convenient way to go about it.

With help from her counselor at the Chamber of Commerce, students from surrounding universities who did background research, and financial help from family and friends, she got her business up and running.

Bunn said that since learning so much from other local owners and in her own entrepreneurial endeavor, she wanted to share her knowledge with others.

“I’ve been learning a lot in the last few years,” she said. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my own business, and I wanted to find a way to help others not have to go through that.”
She said that she had always planned on writing a book, but when Martin came to her and suggested the TV vlog idea, she thought it was a perfect alternative.

StylesGroundUp.TV is having a launch party May 20 at The Camel, at which Martin and Bunn will be giving $1,000 to a winner who comes up with the best plan for a new business. Tickets are on sale for $10, and according to Bunn they have filled between 125 and 150 of their 200 available seats.
