Cookout fires up another Richmond location

CookoutA popular West End burger and shake joint just opened a second Richmond location.

Cookout, home of the $2.39 burger, 41 milkshake flavors and a double drive-through, opened on Broad Street near the corner of Staples Mill Road.

The first Richmond location, which opened on Eastridge Road in Henrico in December, is so popular that traffic backs up in a nearby turning lane. The restaurant sometimes has an employee wear an orange vest and direct traffic.

Construction on the second location, a former Bullets at 4802 W. Broad St., began in late January.

Like the first Richmond Cookout and most others, the West Broad location has two drive-throughs  but no indoor dining area. The new location also has a walk up window.

Cookout was started by Morris Reaves in 1989 and has grown to 83 locations in Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The company was founded in Greensboro, N.C., and is headquartered in Archdale, N.C.

Besides burgers and shakes, Cookout serves barbecue, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, wraps and floats.

CEO Jeremy Reaves, son of Morris Reaves, did not respond to BizSense by press time.

I experienced Cookout for the first time a few weeks ago. My family was in town for my graduation and we decided to stop there for lunch. We went to the newly opened location on Broad Street. First impression: “This must be GREAT food judging by the line of cars stretching out onto Broad Street and sprawled throughout the neighboring Burger King parking lot” (there were about 15 cars in the BK lot, only about 2 of them were for BK, the rest were at Cookout; I’m sure BK management wasn’t too happy). I was a bit intimidated by the… Read more »

I can’t stand Cook Out….They are thorn in my flesh. They cause crazy traffic jams. Especially the one over near Regency Mall….Do not like them one bit.

You can’t stand Cook Out because they are successful? That is a strange line of reasoning there…

Read it Kevin “….They are thorn in my flesh. They cause crazy traffic jams. Especially the one over near Regency Mall” That place is an accident waiting to happen.

A former employee speaking from the heart here…….the place is amazing, yes there may be traffic jams and maybe a few accidents but can you blame them? the food is great and really is made to order not assembled to order. It’s crowded with employees inside but that’s how they get food out so quickly. The milkshakes are crazy good, the best I have EVER had and I mean it. If I had to, I would def go back to working there.

I have been to this place a couple of times before and the food is good. This was my third visit at lunch and when we got back to the office and I opened my order to eat, it was not what I ordered. We ordered a BBQ Plate and what I got was a BBQ sandwich instead. When we were ordering we could tell something was not the same but could not put our finger on it. I will give it one more try and if this happens again it will be our last as money is hard earned.
