Farmers markets’ off-season wilts away

A new indoor farmers market is coming to the West End.

ChiknEGG Productions, the company that operates My Manakin Market in Goochland, will host the weekly event at Kitchen Thyme in the Olde Town Shopping Center on West Broad Street.

Market manager Tim Randolph said hosting the event at Kitchen Thyme, a professional cooking space available to rent by the hour, should help bring in foot traffic.

“We ran a similar winter market last year at in Goochland,” Randolph said. “It was fairly successful, but it was a little out of the way. This is really a prime location.”

The new market will run Saturdays beginning at 10 a.m. from Dec. 8 through April 27.

Randolph said that the My Kitchen Thyme Indoor Winter Market would be smaller than the company’s summer event but that he’d like to see about 15 vendors a week.

“Obviously the variety of produce isn’t going to be there, because there are some things you just can’t grow in the winter,” Randolph said. “But we’re still going to have some greens, and we’ll have products like meats, cheeses and artisan crafts.”

Vendors will pay $20 a week to rent a space, and Kitchen Thyme and ChicknEGG Productions will split the revenue.

Kitchen Thyme owner Melissa Krumbein said she hopes the market will help attract new clients to her business.

“A lot of people who sell to farmers markets bust their butts at home to make 50 loaves of bread in a day,” Krumbein said. “I want to spread the word that if they leased space from Kitchen Thyme, you could do the same amount of work in six hours.”

Krumbein says that she has three regular clients who sell their goods at farmers markets but that most of her business comes from food truck vendors.

BizSense reported in October on another new farmers market: GrowRVA, the group behind the popular South of the James Market, is teaming with Urban Farmhouse Market and Cafe to launch the Urban Farmhouse Farmers Market in Midlothian.

You know what would be great for an indoor [year-round] farmers market?

The building at the corner of Adams and Franklin streets. I believe (or assume) it used to be some kind of place of worship and know it was at one point (and possibly still) owned by the Jefferson Hotel and used as storage. It could be Richmond’s version of the Quincy Market in Boston.

What a great space for an indoor farmer’s market. It’s great innovative thinking like Ms. Krumbein’s that makes for a thriving and vigorous business community!
