As VCU prepares to tip off March Madness tonight against the Akron Zips, Rodney the Ram is preparing for a facelift.

Virginia Commonwealth University has put out a call to update the athletic department’s ram logo, which in its current incarnation can’t be federally trademarked.

In a request for proposals (RFP) issued this year, the university said it’s looking for a new design to “meet the standards of the VCU identity.”

The move comes at a time when at a time when the school is becoming more of a household name, largely due to the performance of its men’s basketball program.

“The existing current marks/logos for the University Department of Athletics are dated, lack consistency in style and use, and lack the ability to be federally trademarked and licensed,” the school said in its RFP.

A committee of VCU staff members will pick the new logo, which could appear as early as next season. The new logo could be incorporated into clothing, banners, souvenirs and other media, according to VCU student paper the Commonwealth Times.

The VCU athletics department could not be reached for comment.

VCU in August launched a five-year branding campaign that included a new school logo, seal and signage.

The school has 16 NCAA Division I athletic programs in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The deadline to submit a design for the RFP was Feb. 12.

Another local school, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, recently issued an RFP for the selection, design and production of a mascot and mascot costume to “embody the JSRCC brand and bring that brand to life.”
