Eight local businesses will get some love Wednesday.
The Richmond Venture Forum unveiled the 2013 honorees for its annual Companies to Watch event. The program, which was rebranded last year as RVA Companies to Watch, recognizes growth companies (established firms on track for significant revenue growth) and emerging startups (promising firms that are in their early stages).
Jessica Barnes, a senior consultant at VACO who organizes the Companies to Watch event, said about 150 nominations were submitted for between 65 and 70 companies.
Tech-related firms made up of the bulk of the nominations, Barnes said. Five of the eight honorees this year are tech firms.
The number of honorees has been cut almost in half from last year. Barnes said that was done to put extra focus on the companies that stood out.
This year’s event will be Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Hippodrome Theater in Jackson Ward.
Hosts for the evening will be Michael Bor, founder of CarLotz, and Ledbury co-founder Paul Trible.
This year’s “growth company” honorees are:
Income Tax School – provides tax preparation training and e-learning to tax, accounting and financial services professionals
Impact Makers – an IT management and consulting firm specializing in the healthcare industry
Best Bully Sticks – a pet treat manufacturer founded in 2008
Shockoe – a mobile app company founded in 2006
This year’s “emerging startup” honorees are:
NimblePitch – a tech firm that utilizes interactive and cloud-based technology for marketing agencies and other clients
SEElogix – an online service for homeowners to digitally store important information about their homes
MAXX Potential – a mobile app and web development company based in Manchester
Refersal – uses social media to help generate referrals for clients’ brands and services

It’s great to see #RVA local companies getting the recognition amongst their peers. Entrepreneurialship is strong in this great city and I, for one am glad to see any story on such hard working and brave adventurers.
