One of the three largest homes in Henrico County has a new owner.

The 15,186-square-foot mansion at 639 Walsing Dr. sold Dec. 19 for $1.64 million, making it the highest-priced home sold in the Richmond market last month, according to the Central Virginia Regional Multiple Listing Service.

Long & Foster Realtor Stevie Watson, who represented the seller, said the house is the third largest in the county and was on the market for six months.

“It’s an extraordinary all-brick home on three acres, which is a rare find,” Watson said. “It sold relatively fast for this expensive of a home in this market.”

The Mooreland Landing mansion sits just north of the James River and to the east of the Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course. It has 10 bedrooms, eight full baths and two half-baths. It was built in 1993 and was most recently assessed at $2.2 million, according to county records.

The house has 10,566 square feet of finished living space and a 5,553-square-foot basement.

Its massive size affords a two-story foyer and a banquet-size dining room, among other features.

Watson said her client, Nazir Chaudhary, had lived in the house since it was built but decided to downsize now that his children are grown. Chaudhary is a local physician.

The buyers were Probodh Chiplunkar and his wife, Simran Chiplunkar, who were represented by RE/MAX Action Realtor Shilpi Golia.

“That’s what they’ve been looking for quite some time,” Golia said of her client.

Real estate agents and localities often calculate square footage differently, but the Walsing Drive home is the third largest house in Henrico, according to the county. The county’s two biggest houses are at 300 Herndon Road and 5301Brook Road.

The Herndon Road property boasts 11,710 square feet of finished living space as well as 9,295 feet of basement space, more than half of which is finished, according to county records.

The house, which was most recently appraised at more than $9.5 million, was previously owned by local businessman Floyd Gottwald Jr. Its owner is now listed as Denny Street LLC.

The house on Brook Road has 10,949 square feet of finished living space. County records show it was built in 1850. Most recently assessed at $816,000, the house is owned by the L.W. Stewart estate.

The Walsing Drive house has 10,566 square feet of finished living space and a 5,553-square-foot basement, nearly all of which is finished.

Overall, home sales were up in the Richmond area in December compared with the same month in 2012.
According to a CVRMLS report, 867 houses were sold in December 2013 in Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover and Henrico. In December 2012, 763 sales closed in the same areas.

In total for the year, 11,014 houses were sold in 2013 in those areas, compared with 10,009 in 2012.

“Nazir Chaudhary sold the house to Probodh Chiplunkar and his wife, Simran Chiplunkar”

Safe to say none of these people will be unduly troubled by the inauthentic, ‘McMansion’ design…

Do tell exactly what one would mean by a comment such as yours?: 1. Are you simply stating the obvious — that these people are no different than the tens of millions of other Americans who live in house of the “inauthentic, ‘McMansion’ style? 2. Or are you trying to ascribe some type of character judgement because their last names don’t quite look like your own? 3. Or perhaps you’re simply (inadvertently) betraying your own insecurity upon realizing that you may never be able to own a 10,000 square foot home? I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and… Read more »
