Wegmans is doubling down in Richmond.

The New York-based supermarket chain today announced plans to build stores in Short Pump and Midlothian,  its first in the Richmond market.

Wegmans will anchor the long-delayed Stonehenge Village development near Chesterfield Towne Center and will join Cabela’s as an anchor at the forthcoming West Broad Marketplace west of Short Pump Town Center.

“We’ve been in discussions with Wegmans for a few years now and just late last year they basically started talking to us again about coming here,” said Bobby Marchetti of Marchetti Properties, which owns Stonehenge Village. “It’s a high-end store that will complement the rest of the tenants that we are talking with right now.”

Marchetti Properties has owned the Stonehenge Village land since 1995, and received approval from the county to build a 230,000-square-foot shopping center on the site last year. While plans are not final yet, Marchetti said Wegmans could take anywhere between 100,000 and 130,000 square feet.

Vienna, Va.-based NVRetail will develop West Broad Marketplace, a 350,000-square-foot shopping center proposed for 60 acres between West Broad Street and Interstate 64. That center scored its first major tenant in February when outdoor retailer Cabela’s signed on to build a 97,500-square-foot store backing up to the interstate.

Wegmans is also currently working on a Charlottesville store.

No further tenants have yet been announced for West Broad Marketplace or Stonehenge Village. Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer brokers Connie Jordan Nielsen and Nicki Jassy handle leasing for Stonehenge Village. Nielsen and Mark Douglas are in charge of filling West Broad Marketplace.

I grew up in Buffalo; hence, I grew up with Wegmans. Fantastic store and a great partner for our community. You will be amazed. I am very excited to finally see this come true.

I moved to Richmond from Rochester, NY in 2000 and have been lobbying for Wegmans to come here ever since. If you like to shop and you’re a foodie you’re going to love this store!

I discovered Wegman’s when they moved into the Northern Virginia, Maryland market and love their quality and service. Glad that no longer need to travel to Fredericksburg for some of their great products.

Kroger’s has built some nice stores, but it seems that both their quality and customer service (in some of their stores) has declined. Wegmans will be eating Kroger’s lunch as I’m eating Wegmans lunch.
