Boutique snags two Carytown storefronts

A prime Carytown retail space has courted a new tenant.

Crème de la Crème, a linens and pottery shop, has plans to open in Cary Court by March. The store is moving into 3,920 square feet at 3156 and 3158 W. Cary St. Subway recently vacated one of the storefronts.

The retail concept is owned by Tara and Ben Wegdam, the same husband-and-wife team that opened Lou Lou next door to Crème de la Crème six months ago.

Company spokesperson Paige Healey said the Wegdams had not planned on opening both shops in Richmond. But Lou Lou has been doing well in Cary Court, she said, and the two storefronts next door came up for lease.

“It was really just kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing,” Healey said. “We had no plans to open a new Crème de la Crème, period. We were done at three.”

Crème de la Crème sells kitchen and dining wares, including French linens, dishes, cutlery and Italian tables, according to a company press release.

Commonwealth Commercial broker Jim McVey, who handles leasing at Cary Court, said Crème de la Crème signed its lease for the space before Subway’s expired last month. The Wegdams didn’t waste any time leasing the space for Lou Lou either and picked up that 1,800-square-foot space just weeks after women’s fashion store Pink moved out in January.

Carytown will be the fourth location for Crème de la Crème, and each of the brand’s previous stores opened right next to another Lou Lou.

The Wegdams launched both brands in Middleburg, Va. between 2001 and 2004. Cary Court was the 17th location for Lou Lou.

Crème de la Crème’s other stores are in Middleburg, Leesburg and Charlottesville.
