The local owner of a Carytown massage and spa franchise is expanding to a new Wegmans-anchored development in Chesterfield County and finalizing a deal for a Charlottesville location.

Andrew Elsbury is opening a Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa in March in the forthcoming Stonehenge Village at Walmart Way and Midlothian Turnpike.

Elsbury owns the Hand & Stone in Carytown and said he has been looking for two years for a location in Midlothian. The arrival of Wegmans helped sell him on the lease of a 2,500-square-foot space in Stonehenge Village.

“Wegmans is an ideal anchor tenant for us,” he said. “We look for high-traffic areas so we don’t have to spend too much on marketing.”

Other tenants at Stonehenge will include La-Z-Boy, Petco, Orangetheory Fitness, and Blaze Pizza. Construction on the shopping center is near completion and planned to be wrapped up in the spring.

The Midlothian Hand & Stone will be the brand’s fourth location in Richmond: In addition to Elsbury’s Carytown location, another franchisee owns shops in Short Pump and Hancock Village on Hull Street Road.

Elsbury said adding more locations will help all franchise owners, in part because it makes a membership at Hand & Stone more attractive. Members have access to all Hand & Stone locations, and franchise owners get a portion of the revenue if one of their members visits another shop.

Hand & Stone offers massage therapy and skincare services like facials and exfoliations. It’s based in New Jersey and has about 260 locations open around the country, Elsbury said. Memberships cost $60 a month, and a Swedish massage for first-time visitors costs $50.

Elsbury said it costs between $450,000 and $600,000 to open a Hand & Stone franchise. He said he hasn’t finalized how he will finance his expansion plans.

And he is working on closing a deal to open a Charlottesville location in the fourth quarter of next year.
He said the spa industry has been helped by the change in the public’s perception that massages are too costly.

“We have a lot of people from all walks of life,” Elsbury said. “What’s great to see is that people are able to come regularly.”
