Pediatric health practice expands, rebrands

With a new name on its masthead, a local medical practice is expanding southward.

Commonwealth Pediatrics, formerly known as Chippenham Pediatrics, opened a new office in the Westchester Commons Shopping Center at 15400 WC Commons Way on Jan. 4. It’s the practice’s third location.

Richard Meador, practice administrator, said growth beyond its original office off Chippenham Parkway prompted the decision to rebrand to Commonwealth Pediatrics.

“We wanted to accurately reflect what the practice has become,” he said.

Commonwealth Pediatrics provides care to children from soon after birth until adolescence, and has a cutoff age of 21. It has 14 providers company-wide, including nine physicians and five nurse practitioners. Its other offices are at 7023 Old Jahnke Road and 6510 Harbour View Court.

The idea to expand into Westchester Commons was sparked in November of 2014, Meador said.

“From our standpoint, that’s where we see a lot of growth,” he said. “One of the focuses of our practice is to serve the community as best we can, and what we’ve seen is that our patients have either moved outside of the Chippenham corridor or they’re moving.”

Its neighbors in Westchester Commons include sandwich chain Which Wich, Carytown Bicycle Co. and Sedona Taphouse.

“This spot was centrally located, we liked the actual space itself, but I think really what sold us on this space was Westchester Commons,” Meador said.

Commonwealth Pediatrics has a 10-year lease on its 6,000-square-foot space, Meador said. It is currently staffed by two providers and has room to increase that number to four.

“We do hope to expand our coverage and provide service to as many people as possible on the Southside,” Meador said.

Commonwealth Pediatrics worked with Price Studios to design the space, and Woolfolk Construction was the general contractor. Meador declined to share how much it cost to open the new location.

As the 40-year-old practice settles into its newest location, its rebranding is still underway. Epiphany Studio is behind the work, and Michael Blanchard of Epiphany said the firm is in the process of developing a new logo and brand identity for Commonwealth Pediatrics. His firm has been working with the practice since September of 2015.

Commonwealth Pediatrics isn’t the only practice changing things up.

OrthoVirginia, a locally based orthopedic specialty group with 105 physicians and 22 offices, recently completed a deal to expand into Lynchburg.

The groups announced a merger last week that allowed Orthopaedic Center of Central Virginia to be absorbed in OrthoVirginia.

OCCV’s Lynchburg office remains, as will its 18 physicians. OCCV has taken on the OrthoVirginia name.

Congratulations to our friends at Commonwealth Peds. As the area’s largest, independent pediatric group, we at Pediatric Partners of Virginia are glad to see our colleagues thriving. Keep up the great work for the #RVA community!
