An offshoot of a national bookstore giant has begun writing its second chapter in Richmond.

2nd & Charles, which buys, sells and trades new and used books, vinyl records, musical instruments, compact discs, comic books and collectibles – and is owned by bookstore chain Books-A-Million – has signed on for its second location in the Richmond market.

It plans to open a 36,000-square-foot store this month at 9004 W. Broad St., in the former Babies R Us space at the Tuckernuck Square shopping center.

That follows the opening earlier this year of its first store in the region, a 20,000-square-foot location at 12244 Chattanooga Plaza in the Chesterfield Crossing shopping center.

Scott Kappler, a 2nd & Charles spokesman, said the reception its Chesterfield store received persuaded the company to expand its operations in the area. The only other Virginia store is in Woodbridge.

The company hires about 50 employees per store, including specialists to appraise items. It offers cash or store credit for items bought from the public.

“We breathe pop culture,” Kappler said. “The products turn over quickly. Every time you come in you’re seeing new products on the shelves.”

Books-A-Million formed 2nd & Charles in 2009 in Alabama. The Tuckernuck Square location will be the company’s 29th store, and another is in the works for Detroit. Books-A-Million has more than 260 U.S. stores, including in Midlothian and Colonial Heights, according to its website.

A grand opening event for the Tuckernuck Square location is planned for July 30, the same day J.K. Rowling will release the latest Harry Potter installment, Kappler said.

2nd & Charles was represented in leasing both Richmond stores by CBRE | Richmond brokers Rob Black, Robby Brownfield and Chris Doyle.
