A North Carolina-based electronic cigarette brand is moving into Chesterfield County for its second retail location in the Richmond market.

MadVapes plans to open in August at 6151 Harbourside Drive, in Harbourside Centre off Hull Street Road. Owners Matt Durand and Gardner Payne leased a 1,400-square-foot space at the Midlothian shopping center.

“There are a lot of shops in that area. The Egg and I and Glory Days Grill were two big draws,” Durand said, referring to two nearby restaurants.

MadVapes is a national chain that sells electronic cigarette equipment along with wax vapor pens and about 250 flavors of the liquid used in the devices, also called juice. The company manufactures its own juice in North Carolina and sells other brands.

It has dozens of locations, mostly in the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia. Durand and Payne have licensed with MadVapes to bring the brand to Virginia. The Midlothian location will join the Richmond area’s first MadVapes at 10252 W. Broad St., which opened last year near Innsbrook, along with a Danville location.

“Business seems to be growing every month,” Durand said of the Innsbrook-area MadVapes. “It’s doing as well as I had hoped.”

That’s in the face of competition from Richmond-based Avail Vapor, an e-cig retailer with more than 70 locations across Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio.

Durand said it will cost about $75,000 to open the second Richmond MadVapes. He said he is in talks with banks to finance the expansion. Eventually, he hopes to add more stores in Virginia.

“My goal has always been to open five stores,” he said. “I’m looking more northern.”
