Method of making modified activated carbon
Patent No. 9,394,179
A process for making modified activated carbon from an activated carbon substrate. The activated carbon substrate is pre-treated to make an exposed surface of the activated carbon substrate substantially hydrophilic, coated with a carbon precursor to form a coated activated carbon, and then the coated activated carbon substrate is heated to carbonize the carbon precursor to from the modified activated carbon. The modified activated carbon comprises a uniform porous carbon membrane formed on an exposed surface of the activated carbon substrate. The carbon membrane can mediate the absorption and/or adsorption kinetics of the activated carbon substrate. The modified activated carbon, which can be incorporated into one or more components of a cigarette, can selectively remove gaseous constituents from mainstream smoke during smoking.

Heat-sealable composite polymeric film
Patent No. 9,393,763
A sealed container containing a foodstuff or beverage has a lid that includes a heat-sealable, composite film that includes a polymeric substrate layer having a first and second surface, a primer layer that includes PVdC disposed on the first surface, and a heat-sealable polymeric layer extrusion coated on the primer layer. The heat-sealable polymeric layer is 12 .mu.m thick or less and includes a copolymer having repeating monomeric units of ethylene and at least a second type of repeating monomeric unit having the formula [–CH.sub.2C(R.sup.1)(X)–] wherein: X is selected from –COOR.sup.2 and –OC(O)CH.sub.3; R.sup.1 =H or methyl; and R.sup.2 is H, C.sub.1-10 alkyl or a counterion M.

Antimicrobial anti-chafing chelated silver oxide compound
Patent No. 9,393,261
Described herewithin is a composition comprising an anti-chafing balm with C18-36 acid triglycerides, capric/carprylic triglycerides, and tribehinin together with a chelated silver oxide complex comprising a barrier film when applied to the skin. The film is a dual purpose antibacterial and anti-chafing barrier topically applied to human skin, providing a layer of chelated silver oxide complex further comprised of a dermatologically acceptable carrier, with friction (chafe) reducing properties, selected from the group consisting of organic solutions, gels, liquids, balms, aerosols, emulsifiers, lotions, water-in-oil emulsions, oil-in-water emulsions, surfactants, aloe barbedensis leaf juice and tocopherol acetate.

Proximal humeral head
Patent No. 9,393,059
A proximal humeral plate assembly can include a first plate, a coupler, a second plate, and a guide. The first plate can define a window and can have a first major surface adapted to conform to a native bone structure. The coupler can be formed on a second major surface of the first plate opposite the first major surface. The second plate can be adapted to engage the coupler, to cover the window, and to conform to the native bone structure. The second plate can include through holes adapted to receive bone screws. The guide can be adapted to engage the coupler and to guide at least one of a cutting tool and a dilation tool.

Stabilized formulations of peptides and proteins protecting against non-enzymatic degradation
Patent No. 9,394,339
Stabilization of water-containing solutions or lyophilizates of proteins and peptide against non-enzymatic deamidation degradation reactions at asparaginyl or glutaminyl residues is achieved using organic anions, such as saccharin, benzenesulfonic acid, gentisic acid or N-acetyltryptophan which have a pKa within the range of 0.5 to 3.5.

Organ protection solution and its method of use
Patent No. 9,399,027
An organ protectant solution which is intravenously administered includes a high concentration of cell-impermeant molecules and at least one oncotic agent. The cell-impermeant molecules preferentially load into the interstitial space and the oncotic agent(s) is/are restricted to the vasculature space. Together, they promote transfer of water from cells to interstitium and into the capillaries, thereby preventing or reducing cell swelling, and maintaining blood circulation and oxygenation of tissues. The organ protectant solution extends the “Golden Hour” for traumatic and/or hemorrhagic shock patients, thereby allowing more time for those patients to reach a point of care facility to receive medical treatment.

Electrospun dextran fibers and devices formed therefrom
Patent No. 9,399,082
The invention generally relates to dextran fibers which are preferably electrospun and devices formed from such fibers. In particular, such devices may include substances of interest (such as therapeutic substances) associated with the electrospun fibers. Upon exposure to a liquid the electrospun fibers dissolve immediately and the substances of interest are released into the liquid. Exemplary devices include bandages formed from electrospun dextran fibers and associated agents that promote hemostasis, such as thrombin and fibrinogen.
