A Washington, D.C.-based makeup and skincare retailer is opening a new location in the West End.
Blue Mercury plans to open at 5011 Huguenot Road in the River Road Shopping Center II. Renovations on the storefront are underway with an expected opening in October, according to a worker on the job site.
The West End shop will be the high-end cosmetics seller’s first in Richmond and eighth in Virginia.
Blue Mercury sells skin care products, makeup, perfume, shampoo, conditioner, and soap. The company was formed in 1999 in Georgetown by Marla Malcom Beck and Barry Beck. In 2015, the company was acquired by Macy’s and by July of this year, had opened its 100th storefront.
Blue Mercury did not return requests for comment regarding its new Richmond store.
The retail mix at River and Huguenot roads has had a mercurial streak in recent months. Changes coming to the shopping area include the opening of Orvis and Yves Delorme, both of which are leaving local malls in favor of River Road Shopping Center.

In my opinion, using the uncommon word, “mercurial” is not an effective way to communicate with the general public.
