A new Korean restaurant plans to blend its flavor into a Chesterfield shopping center that’s shown it has a taste for international tenants.

San Su, located in the Chippenham Square Shopping Center at 7437 Midlothian Turnpike, is preparing for its grand opening this week, said owner Alex Hyun.

The restaurant’s 5,000 square feet was previously occupied by the Original Caribbean Pot.

Hyun, a Newport News resident who has run a seafood wholesaling business in Norfolk, said he is investing about $250,000 of his own capital to start the restaurant.

He said his wholesaling business has shown him Richmond’s appetite for all things that come from the sea.

“I’ve sold lots of king crabs, snow crabs and lobsters to restaurants and stores across Richmond,” Hyun said. “Being away from the sea, people get hungry for seafood…I decided that it was time for me to open my own restaurant that provides those types of foods.”

With 150 seats, San Su plans to serve a number of entrees, including Korean barbecue, sushi and steamed seafood dishes.

“It’s going to be authentic Korean food,” said Hyun,

San Su also plans to serve beer and wine, and will incorporate a paging system for wait staff to catch their attention, Hyun said. He added the restaurant will be staffed by three chefs that each have about 20 years of experience.

Located less than a mile from the Richmond City/Chesterfield County line between Powhite and Chippenham parkways, San Su adds to an area that has a number of Korean, Japanese and Mexican food offerings.

And that includes Chippenham Square Shopping Center, whose primary anchor tenant is New Grand Mart – an international food mart that sells a number of diverse vegetables, fruits and spices from around the world.

“When I was looking for a place to open the restaurant, I wanted to open it in a place where there were a number of different restaurants,” Hyun said. “This was the perfect location to add a restaurant because the area is so diverse.”

Colliers International brokers Brian Glass and Yasmine Hamad represented the landlord in the signing of the San Su lease, which was sealed in April.
