Chocolatier opens sweet shop on West Broad

After stints in Forest Hill, Church Hill and Manchester, a local chocolate maker is up and running in her new downtown digs.

Chocolates By Kelly opened this week at 414 W. Broad St., along a stretch of downtown that has seen a recent stream of new tenants.

Kelly Walker Wombold launched Chocolates by Kelly in 2008. Dan Steiner of West End accounting firm Steiner Business Solutions joined forces with her as investor in earlier this year.

Their new downtown shop will sell items such as chocolate-covered pretzels, nuts and fruits. The location will also serve hot chocolate, coffee and tea, Wombold said, and may eventually serve beer and wine.

The location is a candy store concept – limited seating and lots of chocolate candies filling cases and apothecaries, allowing customers to buy candies by the pound. Wombold will also host chocolate-making classes for the curious and large parties.

With the move behind them, Chocolates By Kelly will be able to focus on its custom chocolate-making business – a part of the business that has seen steady growth with area companies that use the candy for campaigns or corporate branding.

Chocolates By Kelly joins other recent arrivals to the neighborhood, including shirt-maker Ledbury, boot-maker Rider Boot and a new boutique for wedding planner Isha Foss Design.

And, adding to the street’s sweet streak, ice cream shop Charm School is in the works a few doors over.

Chocolates By Kelly is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday; and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The shop is closed on Monday.
