BizSense adds another Hokie

Mike Platania

The Richmond BizSense staff has grown again.

Longtime Richmonder and Virginia Tech grad Mike Platania is our newest reporter. He joined the staff last month and is tasked with digging up scoops on several beats, including startups, retail, the business of booze, nonprofits, healthcare and more.

Mike grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York and moved to Richmond at age 12. He graduated from Cosby High and earned his journalism degree in 2013 from Tech, where he wrote for the school newspaper and also had a brief stint on the cheerleading team.

In between freelance gigs over the last couple years, Mike spent much of his time on two wheels, running cross-country bike trips for a nonprofit out of Blacksburg.

That gig took him on three cross-country rides, going from Maine to Seattle and from Yorktown to San Francisco – all on the same Cannondale bike.

His pedal-powered odometer recently hit 10,000 miles and he’s anxious to use some of his hard-earned reporter pay to buy a new ride.

Loyal BizSense readers: please welcome Mike into the fold and throw a rookie reporter a bone in the form of a few juicy news tips. He’s at [email protected].

And as a result of Mike’s arrival, our reporter J. Elias O’Neal has taken over the commercial real estate beat, in addition to his coverage of restaurants. So if you’re a broker or developer in town and haven’t already heard from him, stay tuned.
