As he focuses in Congress on the national economy, a local representative in the U.S. House of Representatives is downsizing his home in Henrico County.

U.S. Rep. Dave Brat sold his house in Twin Hickory on March 9 for $560,000. The 3,900-square-foot house at 11601 Hickory Lake Terrace went under contract Jan. 2, said listing agent Patti Hornstra of Keller Williams.

Hornstra, who represented Brat and his wife Laura in the transaction, said the couple is downsizing to another home in Henrico. She said they have not yet moved into their new home, the location of which she declined to specify.

“Their oldest (child) is in college, so it’s just a good time for them to downsize,” Hornstra said. She said she came by the listing because she has known the Brats for years.

Juliana Heerschap, Brat’s press secretary, said in a statement that the family will remain in the area.

“Congressman Brat’s son recently went off to college and the family is downsizing. Their new home will be just a few miles down the road,” she said.

The buyers, who Hornstra said are local, were not listed on online county property records Monday. They were represented by Barbara Reagan of Long & Foster.

The Brats had the house built in 2003 and were the original occupants. Property records show they purchased it from local builder Boone Homes for $421,116.

The property, beside Interstate 295 and the Twin Hickory Homeowners Association clubhouse, most recently was assessed by the county at $529,200.

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom house hit the market last October with an asking price of $575,000. Hornstra said it was not a challenging listing – attracting a buyer within two months.

“It’s a beautiful home,” she said. “Laura is an immaculate housekeeper, even with a job and a couple children. It showed beautifully, it’s decorator quality, so it wasn’t hard to find a buyer.”

Hornstra said the home’s proximity to the clubhouse, as well as to I-295 and Short Pump, were additional selling points.

“It’s got views of the lake at Twin Hickory, it’s close to the tennis courts and the pool, and Twin Hickory is just a very nice, central location, convenient to the interstates and all the conveniences of the Short Pump area,” she said.

A former economics professor at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Brat was elected to Congress in 2014 after defeating then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a Republican primary. He recently was appointed and started serving as chairman of the Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access Subcommittee.

What a sexist comment by the realtor. Is only the wife responsible for keeping the home immaculate “even with a job and a couple children.”? I mean really, it’s not like the kids are toddlers and somehow I feel pretty confident a maid service was involved. But regardless, are we still in the 1950s?
