Will Wade is unloading some local real estate on his way to Baton Rouge.

The former VCU men’s basketball coach and his wife Lauren listed their Maymont-area house at 1919 Carter St. on Monday. The 3,300-square-foot home, on a third of an acre overlooking the James River, hit the market with a price tag of $840,000.

The Wades listed the house with Real Living Eudailey Real Estate’s Van Shepherd, who represented the couple when they purchased the house new in 2015 for $790,000, according to city property records. The latest city assessment valued the property at $811,000.

The 2015 purchase coincided with Wade being named head coach at VCU following the departure of Shaka Smart, who left his home in the Fan for a coaching job at the University of Texas after six years with the Rams.

Wade accepted an offer in March to become head coach at Louisiana State University. He has since been replaced by Mike Rhoades, who, like Wade, served under Smart at VCU as an assistant coach.

Shepherd said the Wades, who have moved to Louisiana, were drawn to the Carter Street house for its location, open floor plan and commercial-grade appliances.

“It’s an absolutely gorgeous property with a lot of detail in it,” said Shepherd, who noted its proximity to downtown and VCU’s Monroe Park and MCV campuses. He said the house would appeal to buyers seeking short commutes to those areas.

The two-story house with a third-floor widow’s watch includes four bedrooms and 4½ bathrooms. Shepherd said the Wades used the widow’s watch as an exercise room, taking advantage of its panoramic views of the river.

Located on a bluff at the southern end of Carter Street, the house is one of several on that stretch of the street built or renovated in recent years by Richmond-based Premier Renovations.

The home includes a multilevel foyer and first- and second-floor master bedrooms. The exterior features double wrap-around porches on the house’s river-facing sides, and the property includes a courtyard and detached two-car garage.

Shepherd has established a webpage for the listing via Real Living’s website. He said an agent preview event is in the works.

While he doesn’t expect the house to sell because of its original owners’ public profile, Shepherd acknowledged it could draw additional interest.

“Is it going to help result in a sale? You never know,” he said. “But it might draw some attention just because of who lived there.”

Upriver from the house across Maymont, a considerably larger listing recently hit the market: the nearly 10,000-square-foot Rothesay mansion, listed last month for $4.2 million.

Actually it might hurt the sale to know who lived there… As a Rams Fan, it would turn me off

I’m surprised the developer of this house and the adjacent properties was not required to extend the sidewalk.
