No position safe at Circuit City

circuitcityFive hundred eighty-eight.

That is the number of employees Circuit City laid off Friday. From account executive to visual merchandiser, the company axed positions in seemingly every department and every level of employment, according to paperwork filed with the state.

Thirty-six systems analysts were let go, the most of any single job title. The list also included 30 programmers, 26 district managers of operations, 18 financial analysts, 17 district managers of human resources and 16 field service managers lost jobs. Managers from 48 departments, ranging from asset protection to training and development, were laid off.

Senior and executive jobs were not immune. Forty-six senior positions were cut, and 11 vice presidents have been given their walking papers.

Circuit City lawyers said the total might reach 700 during bankruptcy proceedings Monday.

Speculation about the exact number bounced between 600 and 1,000 over the weekend as Circuit City refrained from making any announcements to the press. The exact number has only come to the surface now that Circuit City submitted the required notice to the state’s dislocated workers unit. Employers laying off more than 500 employees must file notice in accordance with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

According to the filing, the affected employees will be terminated by Jan. 9. But most will be long gone by then. Circuit City attorney Greg Galardi said in court that the company might not be able to pay salaries for the next 60 days as it intended. The cost of keeping the laid-off employees on payroll is $1.2 million every two weeks, according to the Times-Dispatch. Circuit City’s unsecured creditors could challenge the continued employee payments.
