Richmond, VA—The University of Richmond will offer a course and workshop June 18-22 to examine the 25 most critical global sustainability challenges.
The School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) and Environic Foundation International (EFI), a research and education foundation based in Richmond, are sponsoring the professional development opportunity, called Global Sustainability Institute.
Institute faculty will relate the top 25 sustainability challenges to local and regional businesses, governments, civic groups and communities. Participants will use case studies and exercises to put sustainable strategies into practice by addressing a sustainability need in their institution, workplace or community.
“EFI’s approach really let’s individuals see the forest, not just individual trees. Understanding the challenges of a very rapidly changing world and how to adapt to them will be the trait that differentiates successful leaders in the 21st century,” said Bill Godfrey, EFI president.
Participants will hear from sustainability experts, including Alicia Zatcoff, sustainability manager for the City of Richmond, who will present a case study of Richmond’s Green Plan.
Other speakers include Peter Adriance, NGO liaison for Baha’is of the U.S.; Ed Barry, executive director of the Sustainable World Initiative; and Pamela J. Puntenney, founder and CEO of Environmental and Human Systems Management. They will participate via video conference from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where they will be participating in and reporting on the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.
Participants will earn a professional certificate and have the option of earning three semester hours of graduate or undergraduate credit.
“Because of the growing importance of sustainability topics, we felt it was important to offer an educational opportunity to benefit a variety of audiences,” said Cary Jamieson, coordinator for environmental stewardship and sustainable design programs at SPCS.
The cost for earning a professional certificate is $1,479, and online registration is available at summer.richmond.edu/gsi.
