Construction

The Home Building Association of Richmond donated $16,044 to Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity. The funds were raised during this year’s Homearama.

Hourigan Construction announced that VCU Academic Learning Commons has been certified LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council. Certification is achieved through a rating system that awards credits based on sustainable design and building practices. The 102,000-square-foot building was completed in 2013.

Education

Northstar Academy is launching Northstar Career Academy this fall with vocational courses in healthcare occupations, business and technology, building trades and materials handling. Northstar, which serves Central Virginian students with academic, social and physical disabilities, is targeting the Career Academy to young adults aged 16 to 22 and hopes to help them develop the skills necessary to achieve independent living, employment and/or post-secondary education.

VCU’s Provisions On Demand Market won the National Association of College & University Food Services’ New Store Design Innovation Award in the category C-Store Best in the Business.

Cynthia Weldon-Lassiter, Ed.D, has been named to the Governing Board of the National Association of Episcopal Schools. She has been the head of school at St. Andrew’s School since 2010 and is a graduate of VCU and Columbia University.

Insurance

Jason Angus, chief marketing officer at The Hilb Group, has been named to Business Insurance magazine’s 40 under 40 list.

Healthcare

VCU Medical Center was selected for the 2014 American Hospital Association-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize, a top honor for leadership and innovation in safety and quality improvement. VCU Medical Center said it implemented training that resulted in a 50 percent reduction in serious safety hospital events, an electronic early warning system that alerts caregivers in real time of a patient’s declining health status, and a community clinic that has enhanced care management and coordination for the sickest, poorest patients.

HCA Virginia’s Chippenham and Johnston-Willis hospitals are participating in the American Orthopaedic Association’s Own the Bone quality improvement program. The hospitals will focus on specific, evidence-based measures to improve patient care after a fracture.

Law

George Keith Martin, managing partner of McGuireWoods’ Richmond office, is the 2014 recipient of the Virginia Bar Association’s LexisNexis Award, which recognizes extraordinary leadership and dedication of the legal profession and public service.

Nonprofits

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has commissioned South African artist Esther Mahlangu to create two large-scale paintings that will become part of the museum’s permanent collection. Mahlangu, the most renowned artist of South Africa’s Ndebele people, will arrive in early September and will stay in Richmond for a month as she paints. The finished work will be presented in October.

ConnectVA launched Community Vital Signs, a website where you can find data on the health of Virginia, broken down by counties and cities.

Image 360-Richmond Radiance Fund offers in-kind sign and graphics services for local nonprofit promotional and informational materials. Applications can be picked up at Image360’s office at 2036 Dabney Road, Suite D., and are due Sept. 19.

Real Estate

Joyner Community Solutions, a property association management firm, was awarded association management at Rocketts Landing. Joyner Commercial, a commercial real estate firm, was awarded the commercial leasing and property management at Rocketts Landing.

Chris Hirth of CBRE|Richmond received the certified property manager designation through the Institute of Real Estate Management. A Virginia Tech graduate, Hirth joined CBRE|Richmond in May 2013 as a real estate manager. He will now be promoted to senior real estate manager.
