Ramen Spot will fill the former L’Apple location at 948 W. Grace St. (Kieran McQuilkin)

Add ramen to the menu of new restaurants bubbling up in VCU territory.

Ramen Spot is set to fill the former L’Apple Chinese Restaurant location at 948 W. Grace St.

Donna Hobbs, a broker with Pollard & Bagby who handled lease negotiations, confirmed the deal. L’Apple closed in June, she said.

No opening date has been released for the new restaurant. An ABC license was filed Sept. 14 for the sale of on-premise beer and wine.

Ben Yi Zhang, the establishment’s registered owner, could not be reached for comment by press time.

A “now open” sign still hangs on the North Harrison Street side of the building, and chairs are stacked on top of tables in the shuttered storefront.

Launched by two former Peter Chang employees, Apple Gao and Adrien Liu, L’Apple opened in the 1,000-square-foot space in spring 2015 serving southwestern Chinese dishes.

Neither Gao nor Liu could be reached for comment about the closure.

Ramen Spot will add to a growing collection of new restaurants competing for student dollars on nearby blocks.

Roots Natural Kitchen, a Charlottesville-based fast casual chain, is preparing to occupy 2,400 square feet in the former Village Café location at 939 W. Grace St. – across the street from Ramen Spot.

Next door, Kung Fu Tea is celebrating a year of business at 946 W. Grace St., along with Rosita’s Taco Shop at 903 W. Grace St.

BB.Q Chicken opened in March at the corner of Franklin and Schafer streets in the Chesterfield Apartments building, while restaurant chain BonChon is preparing to open at 308 N. Laurel St.

Other established eateries in the area include Village Café, Hibachi Box, Ipanema Café, Top Ten Thai and Shawarma Shack.
