Charlottesville head shop sprouts Richmond location

A smoke shop with roots in Colorado and Charlottesville has budded in the Fan.

Higher Education, which sells pipes, tobacco, rolling papers and smoking accessories, opened in September at 2307 W. Cary St.

It’s the second location for owner Dawn Morris, who first opened Higher Education in Fort Collins, Colorado, in 1998. In 2015, she moved back to Zion Crossroads, Virginia, and re-opened the shop in Charlottesville, which remains in business.

“A lot of people were coming to the Charlottesville store from Richmond,” Morris said. “It was almost like a request.”

Along with traditional head shop items – colorful glass pipes, grinders and rolling papers – Morris said, Higher Education stocks smoking accessories from the past and future alike.

“We have things from the 1960s like TobaccoMasters, but we also have silicon water pipes,” she said.

While the company doesn’t carry e-cigarette liquid, Morris said, its Cannabidiol products have been popular. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a chemical found in cannabis that’s legal in all 50 states and sold in the form of oils, edibles and pills.

Aside from what some might assume of the shop based on its name, Morris said, the moniker “Higher Education” has more than one meaning.

“We try not to cater to one group of people,” she said. “People think the name’s clever but we do try to teach people (about the products).”

The brand is leasing a 2,000-square-foot space near the corner of West Cary Street and Addison Street. It was formerly Cary Street Upholstery and motorcycle shop Cognito Moto, which has since relocated to 3 S. Granby St.

Local pipe shop chain Kulture was founded in Shockoe Bottom in 1999 and has grown to add three more shops around town in Short Pump, Midlothian and the Fan.
