For the second time in as many years, the PGA’s trip through Richmond ended with some drama.

German golf legend Bernhard Langer sank a long eagle putt on the 18th hole to best Scott Verplank by one shot and win the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, a PGA Tour Champions event held this weekend at the Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course.

Last year’s inaugural tournament was decided by a 10-foot putt sunk on the first hole of a playoff between Scott McCarron and Tom Byrum.

PGA Tour Champions is the new brand of what used to be the Senior PGA and then the Champions Tour, which in addition to Langer features well-known pros over the age of 50 such as Vijay Singh, John Daly, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Fred Couples and others.

The Dominion tournament is the first stop in the Charles Schwab Cup, a three-event playoff series. CCV is signed on to host it through at least 2019.

In addition to Dominion’s title sponsorship, other local companies to buy in included founding sponsors VCU Health, The Riverstone Group and TowneBank.
