A former big box store site is giving way to new construction that’s set to add several retailers to a Chesterfield County shopping center.
The 11-acre site previously filled by a Kmart store in the Breckenridge Center in Chester is slated for a redevelopment that will house national retailers T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods, Ross Dress For Less, Ulta and PetSmart.
Jeff Lamson, a Chesterfield County senior planner overseeing the project, confirmed the retailers lined up for the 96,600-square-foot development, which was approved last year by the county’s community development division.
The new construction will replace the 104,000-square-foot former Kmart building, which was razed last year after being closed for nearly a year.
Breckenridge Center, at 12810 Jefferson Davis Highway, is owned and managed by Chapel Hill, North Carolina-based GFD Management, a commercial real estate company with 21 properties in four states, according to its website. The company did not return calls seeking comment Tuesday.
GFD’s portfolio totals 2.5 million square feet of retail space across North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Breckenridge Center is its only Virginia asset.
The 41-acre center includes tenants such as Kohl’s, Kroger, Red Wing Shoes, Famous Footwear, Cato and Rent-A-Center. GFD does not own several outparcels fronting Jefferson Davis Highway that include a Taco Bell, Panera Bread and Payless Shoes.
The additions to Breckenridge join other national retailers in the area around West Hundred Road and Jefferson Davis Highway, including Home Depot, Target and Lowe’s.
A construction timeline and store opening dates for the Breckenridge development have not been released.

This is great news, with the closing of Martin’s across the street, that intersection of Route 1 and Route 10 needed a few more anchor stores to prop up everything else. I’m glad to see there will be a few stores that we need in Chester.

Ross & TJ Maxx/Homegoods are two totally different stores, with TJMaxx/Homegoods being a little more upscale than Ross. Yes, they both sell discount clothing & overstock but most TJMaxx/Homegoods I’ve seen are a little more upscale than your average Ross. This sounds like a great plan.
I wonder if anything is going to be done with the property across the street. Seems a shame to let that sit there unoccupied and build more. There is no way all of those stores are going to fit where KMart once was. What a waste of resources!
