The newest tenant for Richmond’s busiest mall has been revealed.

Short Pump Town Center on Wednesday announced Old Navy will fill a 12,500-square-foot storefront on its lower level. It will be the national clothing retailer’s sixth store in the Richmond area.

Old Navy will take over space vacated in February by Saxon Shoes.

Saxon owner Gary Weiner said last month he consolidated his two-level store into the upper floor after the mall approached him last year about vacating the downstairs space to make way for a new tenant.

Old Navy is aiming to open in Short Pump this summer. The new store will join locations in Chesterfield Towne Center, Willow Lawn, Hanover Square North Shopping Center, Commonwealth Centre and Colonial Heights. The brand is a subsidiary of retail giant Gap Inc.

Short Pump Town Center has over 140 tenants and boasts a 98 percent occupancy rate. Last fall the mall welcomed locally based men’s retailer Collared Greens, and women’s retailer Anthropologie is planning to open there this summer.

The mall, which opened in 2003, is owned by Pruit Cos. and investment firms Forest City Realty Trust and QIC. In October, Australia-based QIC went under contract to purchase Forest City’s 33 percent stake in the mall. The deal is set to close “as Forest City secures replacement assets,” per a company release.

What happened to the Eddie Bauer Store? Old Navy took over that space also. Is it coming back somewhere else in Richmond?
