A major airline has shrunk its local workforce as its contract with a competitor has run its course.
Delta Global Services, a subsidiary of Delta Airlines that provides mechanics, aircraft marshals, baggage services, customer-service agents and cargo handling, plans to lay off 92 employees in Richmond, according to an Aug. 6 filing with the Virginia Employment Commission.
Company spokeswoman Ashton Kang confirmed the layoffs and said the company is reducing staff at Richmond International Airport in response to a third-party contract ending.
RIC said the change is related to a contract DGS had to provide competitor United Airlines with baggage handlers at RIC. United is now running those services at RIC through its United Ground Express subsidiary.
The DGS layoffs will go into effect on Oct. 17, according to the VEC filing.
“DGS will attempt to accommodate those full-time employees affected by this layoff who are willing to transfer to other stations in other cities if openings exist,” Kang said in an email.
Messages left for United were not returned on Thursday and it’s unclear if any of the 92 DGS workers will be picked up by United.
Elsewhere in the business of RIC, the airport announced a $45 million expansion for Concourse A.
Another round of local layoff occured in recent weeks. Northrup Grumman laid off 348 employees at its Chester facility. The layoffs, which are effective Aug. 17, came after a 13-year IT deal with the state came to a close.
