A 3-year-old local residential real estate brokerage is diving into the commercial scene and just closed its first deal.

Icon Realty is branching out into the realm of commercial real estate with the launch of its new Icon Commercial division in March.

The new arm of the business is run by COO and broker Robert Jones II, whose wife Catina Jones founded Icon Realty in Church Hill about three years ago.

“It’s a new direction for us, but a necessary one,” Robert said. “We’re getting our name out there, and want to continue building the Icon brand … commercial brokerage is a big part of that growth for us.”

Icon Realty has grown from five residential agents to about 25 since its inception and is based in Rocketts Landing in Henrico County.

Jones is joined at Icon Commercial by Colby Kay, a broker and Realtor who was previously with Richmond-based One South Commercial and One South Realty.

Kay and Jones have a combined 50-plus years of business experience, albeit in different industries.

Kay has been part of the Central Virginia real estate industry since graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University in the early 1990s. Jones owns Parkside Barber Shop & Grooming Lounge across from Innsbrook, a business he’s had for nearly 25 years and will continue to operate.

“I bring my experience from the real estate side,” Kay said. “Robert brings his business resume to the table. That’s an important combination to have when we’re working with first-time clients, because while I see things from a square-footage standpoint, Robert sees it from the perspective of a business owner.”

The firm found its first commercial deal close to home in Rocketts Landing, as it helped broker a lease this month to bring Indian restaurant The Bombay Co. to the former Urban Farmhouse & Market space at 4821 Old Main St.

Aside from its recent Rocketts Landing transaction, Jones said Icon Commercial is in talks with several property owners and developers but could not disclose details about pending partnerships.

He said the firm’s challenge is to continue to get the word out and land listings as the new arrival in a competitive market.

“Inventory is very tight across the region,” Jones said. “We’re looking everywhere, knocking on doors and trying to drum up things for us to sell and lease.”
