Two tech companies move into Scott’s Addition

Scott’s Addition has a couple new office tenants, including a new arrival at the HandCraft Cleaners building.

Tahzoo, a digital customer relations firm that caters to Fortune 500 companies, has snagged a space in the HandCraft building at 1501 Roseneath Road, rounding out the tenancy at one of the neighborhood’s largest commercial redevelopments. A few blocks away business communications platform Hatch has landed in a Spy Rock-owned building on Mactavish Avenue.

D.C.-based Tahzoo is the latest company to lease office space in the HandCraft building, where it signed a deal for a 6,460-square-foot space. The spot was previously occupied by payment processing startup Blueswipe, which came to the building in spring 2018 and left in March.

The new space is larger than Tahzoo’s previous digs at 1411 W. Main St. in the Fan, where it had about 2,000 square feet.

CEO Brad Heidemann said the move was made to help the company’s plan to expand its Richmond office workforce. The new office has the space for that growth and the amenities in Scott’s Addition, a hot spot for breweries and restaurants that Heidemann hopes will help lure new talent.

“The last thing you want is to be stuck in an office park somewhere,” he said.

Tahzoo first planted its flag in the Richmond area about a decade ago, when it set up in the West End. Its local office has about 20 employees and it plans to hire another 15 by year-end and 30 more in 2021. It also has offices in D.C., the West Coast, Europe and Asia, with more than 100 total employees.

Tahzoo signed the lease prior to the pandemic, but people started working out of the new office in earnest only in the last couple weeks. Heidemann said business has been brisk for Tahzoo during the pandemic, and he expects that to continue as companies adapt to a more digital way of doing things.

“Now more than ever, companies need to learn how to interact with customers in the digital space,” he said. “Some of those (customer) habits, they won’t go away even when COVID does.”

Charlie Polk of JLL handled the lease on behalf of the tenant. Cheryle Toy and Read Goode of Divaris Real Estate represented the landlord in the lease negotiations. 510 Architects, which is also a tenant in HandCraft, designed the space.

Though the HandCraft building is currently booked up, a vacancy could be in its future.

Need Supply Co., a Richmond-based clothing company, is planning to permanently shut down all its operations. That includes its headquarters in the HandCraft building, where it’s been since 2018, and its retail space in Carytown.

The HandCraft building is owned by brothers Jay, Keith and Jeff Nichols, who run HandCraft Services, a healthcare linens and uniforms cleaner. The nearly 90,000-square-foot building is a former commercial cleaning facility. HandCraft moved out of the building and relocated operations to south Richmond in 2015, paving the way for a redevelopment of the property into multitenant space.

Hatch trades Manchester for Scott’s Addition

Hatch, a tech firm that provides customer service and sales communication software for home improvement companies, moved into a new office at 1810 Mactavish Ave. in early June. The company leases a space of about 6,000 square feet, a big step up from the 1,200-square-foot office it occupied at 220 Hull St. in Manchester.

Marketing manager Matt Minor said its motivation for the move was similar to that of Tahzoo: to attract young professionals.

“Scott’s Addition is an up-and-coming area,” he said.

An initial plan to move in April was put on hold due to the pandemic.

The company had 25 employees before the pandemic and now has 35. While some of the new hires were on the company’s radar prior to the pandemic, others were added on to help with the increased workload the pandemic created for the company.

Minor said the home improvement sector as a rule wasn’t well-connected technologically prior to the pandemic. Hatch was in a good position to help clients facilitate pivots to online services and not-in-person meetings in the pandemic era.

“We found our product is a really good fit, especially as states went into lockdown,” Minor said. “We are in a niche to help businesses move forward.”

Architectural firm Fultz & Singh designed the office. Hatch negotiated the lease directly with Spy Rock Real Estate Group, which owns the building.
