New ice cream shop owner is sweet on Shockoe Bottom

A new ice cream shop thinks it has found its sweet spot in Shockoe Bottom.

Sweet Spot Ice Cream Cafe opened at 6 N. 18th St. in late January, the brainchild of Sabrina Fitz, who’s made a bet that her dessert concept will pair well with the neighborhood’s restaurant scene.

“Just looking at the area, like four to five miles out, there was really no ice cream,” she said. “I thought there was a need with all the restaurants, thinking ‘what’s amazing food without dessert?’”

The store stocks more than 48 flavors of ice cream, along with coffee, cookies, pies, smoothies and other treats. The offerings include non-dairy ice cream and sorbet as well.

The shop’s wide assortment of sweets and other menu items, including its ice cream, is sourced from third-parties. Fitz said that in doing so, she can offset the cost associated with a big menu.

“That keeps prices down so we can provide a larger variety,” she said.

Fitz declined to share her ice cream supplier.

The 1,200-square-foot shop offers in-store and curbside sales, as well as delivery through third-party apps like DoorDash and Grubhub. Fitz said the shop could decide to introduce its own in-house delivery service through its own app in the future.

The shop, which has 13 employees, is a side-gig for Fitz, who works full-time as an independent real estate developer. She said her mother’s sweet tooth was the inspiration behind the shop.

“I started to think about what is something that everybody loves. I was thinking about my mom and how ice cream was her favorite and always brought a smile to her face,” Fitz said.

Sweet Spot is in the midst of a cluster of restaurants, Latin American eatery Crave and pizza spot Mommiana’s Dough being recent arrivals to the area.
