A local cycling gym’s Museum District studio is rolling into a larger space across the street.
Boho Studios expects to relocate from its original location at 714 N. Sheppard St. to 709-711 N. Sheppard St. this fall.
Owner AnnMarie Grohs, who founded Boho in 2013, is betting on a bump in customer demand as the world continues to move closer to normalcy after a year dominated by pandemic-related restrictions.
Grohs expects to have up to 42 bikes in her new space, which is 2,100 square feet. That’s about 10 bikes more than the pre-pandemic fleet of 31 bikes that she had in her current 1,475-square-foot space.
The company also plans to hire more employees as part of the expansion. The Museum District studio has about 16 employees, and expects to add another five to seven employees when it relocates.

The new space, which was formerly home to Brook’s Stitch & Fold, is slated for a renovation before the studio moves in. Grohs declined to comment on the project’s budget, but said the studio would share costs with the landlord.
Brook’s Stitch & Fold shuttered its location on North Sheppard Street in April and moved to 108 E. Nine Mile Road in Highland Springs.
While Grohs had wanted a larger studio space before the pandemic, the move is also inspired by her expectation that college students will return in greater numbers to the city as VCU plans for relatively normal fall operations.
“I’m expecting big things in the next six months, to say the least,” she said. “There’s a big population of people who have been gone from the city and I think we’re all noticing it. Even if just 10 percent of 30,000 people are available to me, that’s a big number to miss.”
Boho also operates a Northside gym that offers yoga as well as cardio and strength training. The company also plans to open a third location as part of The Veil Brewing Co.-anchored Hill Standard development in Forest Hill, but Grohs said pandemic-related delays have slowed the launch of Boho’s venture there.
