A homegrown hot chicken restaurant chain is turning up the heat with plans for a new location to join several of the brand’s outposts already open in the area.

Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken is preparing to open at 1307 W. Broad St., in a former Waffle House storefront across the street from VCU’s Siegel Center.

Launched by Sweet Frog founder Derek Cha and his business partner Mike Kim, Hangry Joe’s restaurants serve up Nashville-style spicy fried chicken sandwiches along with tenders and wings.

Signage recently went up on the upcoming restaurant’s exterior, which would appear primed to be the fourth Hangry Joe’s in the Richmond area.

There isn’t a target date for when the restaurant would open, a company spokeswoman said in an email Monday. Hangry Joe’s leased the roughly 2,400-square-foot space last year.

Cha and Kim opened the first Hangry Joe’s location at 10040 Sliding Hill Road in Ashland in May 2021. Since then, the chain has quickly grown locally and out of state. In the Richmond area, there are locations at 1501 N. Parham Road near Regency and another near the Regal Cinemas in the Downtown Short Pump shopping center.

There are currently 33 Hangry Joe’s locations that are open and 25 in the process of opening, according to the spokeswoman. The company plans to open 100 locations by the end of the year, and expects to open restaurants in South Korea and Dubai in a month. The company has or is planning restaurants in 12 states.

Cha opened the first Sweet Frog frozen yogurt shop in 2009 and later sold his stake in the company.

Just goes to show you, if you offer actual spicy food, you can do well. Big fan, wish you continued success.
