The latest addition to Arthur Ashe Boulevard’s dining scene marks a career change for Brandon Lewis, who has traded mortgages and spreadsheets for ice cream scoops and hot dog buns.

The 25-year veteran of the residential lending industry recently opened Ellie’s Hot Dogs & Ice Cream at 3312 N. Arthur Ashe Blvd., a walk-up spot that previously was home to ice cream stand Sweet 95 and most recently shaved ice shop Suzy Sno.

“About a year ago I said I’d get out and do something that provides a bit more happiness,” Lewis said of his career about-face. “I figured it was now or never.”

Named for Lewis’ family dog, Ellie’s offers a variety of hot dogs priced between $4 and $6, including a steak-and-cheese dog that Lewis said has been popular in the early going. Ellie’s also serves cones, milkshakes and sundaes made with Hershey’s Ice Cream.

With a walk-up window and patio seating, Lewis said he wants Ellie’s to be a family- and dog-friendly spot.

“It’s a real laid-back, relaxed type of experience,” he said.

The space became available after Suzy Sno, owned by Ruby Scoops owner Rabia Kamara, relocated to Carytown.

Ellie’s is adjacent to Brick House on the Boulevard, a diner that recently opened in the former Kitchen 64 space at 3336 N. Arthur Ashe Blvd. A few blocks south along Arthur Ashe Boulevard is BigWife’s Mac n’ Cheese, a new restaurant from Bookbinder’s owner John Taxin. BigWife’s space had formerly been home to Growlers To Go.

Hello, any idea when the Shake Shack restaurant on Broad St. will open? I’ve been driving past there for months! Can hardly wait! I’ve been chasing a burger since the mid-seventys when Johnson Burger Bar was on Cary & Harrison (Now VCU).

If he runs this place like he ran his mortgage business it will be a class act joint. Can’t wait to try it out!
