By way of Milwaukee, a sizable wealth advisory firm has made its entrance into the competitive Richmond market.

Baird, which manages $310 billion in client assets nationwide, opened its first local office in recent weeks after recruiting a duo of financial advisers from a rival firm.

Manning the company’s new Henrico outpost are Robert Bowman and Matthew Preddy, both of whom came over from Edelman Financial Engines.

Each has about two decades in the industry, with Bowman managing about $285 million in client assets at his previous post at Edelman. Preddy managed about $225 million in client assets at Edelman.

Jim McGuire, who manages the new Baird branch as well as a number of other branches between Virginia and New Jersey, said the addition of an office in Richmond comes on the heels of the firm’s expansion in Northern Virginia earlier this year. It also has an office in Lynchburg.

“Richmond has been interesting to our firm for quite awhile,” McGuire said. “We have an office in Lynchburg and have done well there for a number of years. We are a Midwestern firm and I think culturally there’s a nice clean fit in Richmond.”

McGuire said the firm made its move after being introduced to Bowman and Preddy in recent months.

“We don’t necessarily target a city or an area, we really go people first. We look for good people who are planning-based, fee-based as far as how they charge a client.”

The duo started with Baird in October and are working from a subleased space at 3957 Westerre Parkway. McGuire said the firm is actively looking for a more permanent space to open in the spring.

The Richmond office is part of Baird’s private wealth services operation, which has 1,400 financial advisers. The company also has investment banking and private equity operations.

Baird was founded 105 years ago and remains privately held and employee-owned. It has 5,200 employees across more than 150 offices nationally.

Bowman and Preddy are joined in the new local office by associate adviser Dustin Dodge and client assistant Ana Rawls.

McGuire said the company will continue to be in conversations to grow its Virginia ranks, including in Richmond.
