After working out of a studio in Scott’s Addition for years, a local ceramics company is adding more of a retail presence to its space along Arthur Ashe Boulevard.

Hechizo, which makes ceramic light fixtures and jewelry, is slated to open a showroom early next month in part of its existing storefront in unit A of 1200 N. Arthur Ashe Blvd., around the corner from Asian restaurant Fat Dragon.

Owner Hali Armstrong said she has long been interested in introducing a retail component to the business since launching about a decade ago.

The opening of the showroom comes as part of Hechizo’s relatively new focus on making and selling handmade ceramic light fixtures, such as sconces and table lamps. Both types of fixtures start at $700 on the company’s website. Hechizo originally made ceramic jewelry, and shifted to emphasize lighting about a year ago.

“Lighting is kind of like jewelry for your home, so it wasn’t a huge departure,” Armstrong said. “It’s where my inspiration lies and what’s sparking the most passion for me.”

The idea for the showroom is that interior designers and others would visit the space to see Hechizo’s light fixtures in person ahead of buying a piece.

“It’s an introduction to what we do,” Armstrong said.

About half of Hechizo’s 1,800-square-foot space is being converted for the showroom, while the rest will remain studio space.

The plan is for the showroom to be open on Fridays, and offer by-appointment hours the rest of the week.

Hechizo, which is Spanish for “spell” or “magic charm,” continues to make jewelry, and offers necklaces, earrings and rings. Armstrong plans to also sell jewelry at the showroom.

The expansion of the business comes after Hechizo was named the 2024 winner in the Overall and Home categories of Garden & Gun’s 15th annual Made in the South Awards.

Being the overall winner of the lifestyle magazine’s contest came with a $15,000 prize. Armstrong said she was investing in marketing, business classes and materials to make products. Looking ahead, Armstrong plans to incorporate glass into her light fixture work.

Hechizo was founded in New York City in 2014. The studio relocated to Scott’s Addition in 2017.
