Two Richmond-area franchises – one a home-grown dumpster chain and the other the local arm of a pool-cleaning business – have recently changed hands.

Mike Dolliver is now at the helm of the local franchise of Mobiledumps, a dumpster-rental company that’s headquartered in Richmond.

Dolliver, who previously spent 25 years in the mortgage industry, most recently at Lender Solutions, said he was in the market for a franchised concept and came across a listing for Mobiledumps. He made the leap in part because he thought it would be a simpler alternative to a franchised restaurant, which he also considered. Mobiledumps rents 14-cubic-yard dumpsters to customers by the day.

“I looked at a couple restaurant businesses, but the more I thought about it, I didn’t want to be in the food service business,” said Dolliver, a Chesterfield resident.

Dolliver bought the local Mobiledumps franchise in mid-December from Chesterfield-based Dunmar Moving Systems, which had run the franchise since spring 2022. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Dolliver said Mobiledumps customers are mostly other businesses, such as roofing and insulation companies, though homeowners also rent the trailers for projects. The company’s wheeled units are pitched as a more convenient and nimble alternative to roll-off dumpsters.

“This operation is about 70 percent commercial, 30 percent consumer,” Dolliver said. “It’s on-demand dumpster services.”

The local Mobiledumps’ pricing is currently set at $299 for a one-day rental, $325 for a two-day rental and $375 for three to seven days, per the company’s website. Dolliver said he planned to increase the price points.

The Richmond franchise has 12 dumpsters and two pickup trucks, which were transferred as part of Dolliver’s recent acquisition. It is based out of a leased space near Chesterfield’s airport and has one part-time employee.

Dolliver’s deal did not include purchasing the larger Mobiledumps franchisor, which keeps its corporate office in the B suite of 3425 W. Leigh St. in Scott’s Addition, where it’s been headquartered since 2021. The company was founded in 2018 by Richmonder Cam Morrison, who continues to run it. Mobiledumps has grown to have a presence in 15 states, according to its website.

The Greater Richmond franchise of swimming pool-cleaning company Pool Scouts also recently came under new ownership.

Married couple Rose and Justin White bought the business in November as they made their leap as first-time business owners.

Rose, who played Division I volleyball for California State University, Sacramento, also works at Richmond Volleyball Club. She said in an interview earlier this month that she planned to keep her day job at the local volleyball organization, while her husband planned to leave his job at the West Broad Honda dealership to focus on Pool Scouts.

They said they were attracted to a franchised business in part to take advantage of the backing of a corporate office. After a year of research, Pool Scouts rose to the top.

“We landed on a franchise because of the support and initial training and everything that comes along with franchising,” Rose said.

Pool Scouts provides swimming pool cleaning and maintenance. Rose said that while a simple concept, the business tries to set itself apart with its approach to logistics and branding.

“We’re not doing anything new or crazy, we’re just doing it in a more professional way,” she said.

Pool Scouts operates year-round, and much of its business is weekly and bi-weekly cleanings and check-ins on chemical levels at swimming pools during warmer months. Weekly pool cleaning starts at $100.

The Whites bought the franchise from Jonathan Walker, who opened it here in 2022. Terms were not disclosed. The local Pool Scouts has five employees.

Pool Scouts is headquartered in Virginia Beach and launched in 2016. The company says it has locations in 17 states.

So great that there are locally based companies to fill these niche services. Good luck to them!
