A logistics company is cutting dozens of jobs at one of its two local warehouses.

Saddle Creek Logistics Services is planning to lay off 54 employees at its facility at 4701 Commerce Road, according to state records.

The Florida-based firm, which offers fulfillment, warehousing and transportation services, operates two local sites – one is the 460,000-square-foot warehouse on Commerce Road in South Richmond and the other is a 43,000-square-foot facility at 540 HP Way in Chester.

Only the Commerce Road operation is affected by the layoffs, according to a May 9 letter from the company to the state announcing the layoffs. The location would not be closed as part of the restructuring, per state records.

The layoffs are expected to begin July 1 and would be completed before the end of the month. Five salaried employees and 49 hourly workers are affected.

It wasn’t clear what motivated the restructuring or how many employees Saddle Creek would have in the Richmond region following the layoffs. The company didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Saddle Creek also is laying off 73 workers at an Atlanta warehouse because it lost its contract with food company Del Monte, trade publication Freight Waves reported earlier this month.

Saddle Creek leases the Commerce Road warehouse, which is part of a two-building complex owned by Texas-based Stream Realty Partners. The other building is occupied by Amazon. Stream Realty bought the center last month from The Halle Cos. for $97 million.

Saddle Creek says on its website it has 50 warehouse facilities across multiple states. The locations in Richmond and Chester are its only locations listed in Virginia.
