A local restaurateur is expanding north out of Carytown with a new location on Boulevard.
Raul Cantu said he will open a second Nacho Mama’s restaurant inside the Clarion Hotel at 3207 N. Boulevard, just up the road from the Diamond.
Cantu, the president of the Carytown Merchant’s Association, said he expects the new Nacho Mama’s to be open in November. He launched the first Nacho Mama’s in 1996 at 3449 W. Cary St. It serves Mexican, Southwestern and Caribbean-style food.
Nacho Mama’s is taking over the space in the hotel that was previously occupied by the Boulevard Bar and Grill. That restaurant closed three weeks ago.
Signs for Nacho Mama’s are on display in the hotel lobby. Construction is underway, and Cantu has applied for an ABC license. The space, which includes a dining area, bar, lounge and patio, can seat 175.
The Clarion is a 176-room hotel built in the early 1970s. It had been a Holiday Inn before becoming a Clarion about two years ago and undergoing exterior renovations this year.
