John W. Clayton Jr. has joined Anderson Strudwick as a managing director of the private client group. Before joining Anderson Strudwick, he served at Ameriprise Financial Services in Richmond. He also brings to the firm more than a decade of experience from Morgan Stanley. He attended Harding University in Arkansas.

Investment banking

James Z. Sowers has joined Transact Capital Partners as a director of the investment banking group.  Sowers has previously worked for BB&T Capital Markets and Sovereign Advisors along with LandAmerica, IBM, GE and Pepsi Co. Prior to joining Transact Capital Partners, Jim was vice president of mergers and acquisitions with LandAmerica Financial Group.  Sowers went to the University of Virginia as an undergraduate and for an MBA.

Hospitality

Laura Garrow has joined New Kent Winery as operations manager. Garrow has worked in the Peninsula area since 2001 as manager of consumer activities for the Williamsburg Winery as well as director of food and beverage and member services at a private country club in Powhatan. She previously worked at wineries in Napa Valley.

Health care

Sheldon Retchin, the chief executive of VCU Health System, was appointed vice chair of the National Health Care Workforce Commission, which is charged with developing evaluations of education and training activities and determining whether the demand for health-care professionals is being met.

Government
John E. Hall was named field office director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Richmond office. He previously served in a similar role in the District of Columbia.  Before joining HUD, Hall was employed by two community development corporations in Texas. Hall attended University of Michigan and obtained a graduate degree from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

Fletcher Mangum, a Richmond-based economist who is also an occasional Richmond BizSense guest columnist, was appointment by Gov. Bob McDonnell to his advisory board of economists.

Marcel Jennings has joined Big River as a creative director/copywriter. Jennings was previously working in a similar role for DDB Chicago. Jennings went to the VCU Brandcenter (1998–2000) and studied as an undergraduate at VCU.
