RICHMOND, Va., April 20, 2011 – As part of its annual Earth Week celebrations, Henrico-based Mondial Assistance is holding a series of events for associates from April 18-21. Associates will bring items for a recycling drive and participate in a NewAgain Virtual Fair and Contest where they can compete to see who has made the best new use for something that would otherwise have been thrown away.
Of particular emphasis for this year’s recycling drive are jeans, which will be donated to a company that recycles denim into home insulation; tennis shoes, which will be transformed into surfaces for sporting courts and playgrounds; and electronics and household items, which will be donated to Goodwill Industries® to aid in job training programs.
“With offices in 29 countries, Mondial Assistance has a global perspective that includes a commitment to reducing our impact on our environment,” said Mark Cipolletti, vice president of communications and social responsibility for Mondial Assistance. “Our tag line is ‘how can we help?’ and an occasion like this really shows how our associates rally behind that motto in support of an important cause.”
The NewAgain Virtual Fair and Contest is an opportunity for associates to show off how they’ve reused something that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill. Throughout the fair, associates will vote for their favorite projects, and the top three vote-getters will each receive a $25 gift card to Whole Foods®.
Mondial Assistance is part of the Allianz group of companies, one of the largest insurance companies in the world and a leader in sustainability and environmental responsibility. Allianz’s global target is a 20 percent carbon dioxide reduction by 2012, compared to emissions in 2006. By the end of 2009, the company had achieved a 14.9 percent reduction in emissions per employee. Allianz has invested in more than 30 wind and solar parks in Germany, France and Italy, via its subsidiary Allianz Renewable Energy Partners, which are capable of powering more than 250,000 homes. Allianz has been included in the Dow Jones sustainability index since 2000 – which ranks the world’s sustainability leaders.
The Earth Week activities were developed by Mondial Assistance’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) team, made up of 21 associates who focus the company’s CSR efforts on volunteerism, charitable giving and environmental awareness. Last year, more than 600 associates participated in Earth Week activities, and more than 60 pieces of equipment were recycled through an electronics recycling drive.
