The former home of a Southside church will hit the auction block about five years after its congregation moved to a bigger location.
Second Baptist Church of South Richmond is selling its building at 105 E. Pilkington St. at a July 23 onsite auction.
The 8,100-square-foot property is more than 100 years old and has generated interest primarily from local church groups, said Pete Hastings, who is handling the sale for Motley’s Auction and Realty Group.
Motley’s has sold about five churches in the past year alone.
“It kind of just snowballed. Churches are not an easy property to sell,” Hastings said. “Once you get one and you’re successful … the [rest] of them kind of came about as a result.”
Members of Second Baptist Church constructed the building in the early 1900s. A 1,800-square-foot parsonage, which is included in the auction, was added in 1948.
Second Baptist Church outgrew the Pilkington Street building and moved into its current location at the Branches Shopping Center on Broad Rock Road about five years ago, said LaValle Stanley, chairman of the church’s trustee ministry.
Second Baptist put the Pilkington Street church on the market immediately after the move, and it has been up for sale ever since. Star Fellowship Baptist Church has been renting the property since shortly after it became available, and Hastings said the congregation has expressed interest in buying it.
Over in Jackson Ward, the century-old 17,000-square-foot Sharon Baptist Church property hit the market in June. It is being marketed for potential redevelopment.
