A Saturday for beer lovers

Richmond’s brewers earned some hardware last weekend.

The city’s three breweries, as well as Midlothian’s Extra Billy’s Smokehouse and Brewery and Hanover County’s Center of the Universe Brewing Company, all placed in Saturday’s Virginia Craft Brewers Cup.

The event was held at Roseland’s Devils Backbone brewery in conjunction with the Virginia Craft Brewers Fest, which event spokesman Matt McCloud said drew more than 2,200 people. The festival featured tastings from 32 Virginia breweries and one cidery.

More than 130 beers were judged between 14 brewing categories. Hardywood Park’s Gingerbread Stout took a gold medal in the Fruit/Spice/Herb/Vegetable category and place third in Best of Show, which pitted winners in each category against each other.

Strangeways’ Mixolydian Rag Rye Bock also took home a gold medal, while the company’s Wallonian Dawn Honey Saison won bronze in the Specialty category. Manchester’s Legend Brewery won two bronze medals for its Hopfest and Pilsner beers.

Extra Billy’s took home gold in the English and American IPA category and silver for its Midlo American Pale Ale. Center of the Universe won two silver medals.

Devils Backbone won Best in Show for the second consecutive year for its Smokehaus Lager.

In June Loveland Distributing spokeswoman Amanda Marable said Virginia has more than 60 breweries in total. Saturday’s head judge Tom Cannon attributed the growth to a loosening of beer distribution laws in the past year, including a law passed to allow breweries to sell pints onsite without offering food.

“That made a big difference to a lot of these guys,” Cannon said. “Breweries are popping up every week all over Virginia these days.”

The Richmond area has at least two new breweries on the way. Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery in Goochland began brewing its first beers last week and Triple Crossing Brewing is on the way in downtown Richmond.

Great news for RVA, but I would note that Strangeways is in Henrico and not the City.

You neglected to mention that Devils Backbone also took home six additional medals
