Collegiate School’s international student conference fosters leadership, global collaboration, social entrepreneurship

3rd annual conference focuses on the environment and the economy

Oct. 7, 2013, Richmond,Va. – Collegiate School is hosting its third annual International Emerging Leaders Conference (Oct. 5-11) and welcoming 45 high school students from 11 nations: China, India, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, Lebanon, Argentina and South Africa.

The conference is believed to be the first program of its kind hosted at an American school during the academic school year. Its mission is to foster global collaboration among students from around the world, teach them product design strategies, and in the process, acquaint these bright young minds with a skillset valued by savvy social entrepreneurs and useful throughout their lives and careers.

During the week-long conference, students will consider an environmental problem, work in teams to devise a solution, and take those solutions from idea stage to the marketplace during a culminating program called DesignPitch that will include live student presentations and real-time voting.

The conference will be rounded out with an academic curriculum that includes visits to the Science Museum, Dominion Resources, MeadWestvaco, the da Vinci Center for Innovation at VCU, the Merhige Center for Environmental Law at the University of Richmond, and the Weinstein International Center at UR. The international students (and 18 Collegiate seniors who are conference delegates) will learn from prominent scholars and business leaders, and share their ideas and perspectives pertaining to the theme of The Global Economy and the Environment.

“Collegiate School believes that global education goes beyond foreign language classes and international travel,” said Clare Sisisky, Collegiate’s Director of Global Education. “Developing students into effective, visionary leaders will be accomplished by instilling a global perspective and understanding of the economic, political, environmental, religious and cultural issues that are reshaping our world.”
