A national brewery recently traveled from the Charles River to the James River to help launch its new beer.
The Boston Beer Company, owner of the Samuel Adams beer brand, this month released a limited batch of its Rebel IPA in Richmond.

Richmond is one of the few markets picked for the beer’s rollout. Others include New England, Dallas, Nashville and California. The West Coast-style IPA will launch nationally in January.
A spokesperson for Samuel Adams said the company included Richmond in its group of pre-launch markets because of the city’s “vibrant craft beer culture and … great beer drinking community.”
Boston Beer held a pre-launch event for Rebel IPA at Mellow Mushroom in Carytown on Tuesday.
In addition to the Mellow Mushroom at 3012 W. Cary St., Rebel IPA can be found on draft at Casa del Barco, Pie, the Camel, Penny Lane, Mojos, Sedona, Diamond Billiards, Sine, the Mill, Baja Bean, Station 2, Rare Old Time and all Capital Ale House locations.
Rebel IPA is brewed in the Samuel Adams nanobrewery, a 10-gallon small batch brewing system at the Boston brewery.
Loveland Distributing Co. distributes Sam Adams in Richmond. Loveland marketing manager Amanda Marable said she’s noticed an increase in breweries choosing to launch in Richmond.
“We’re seeing more and more people wanting to bring stuff to Richmond before other markets,” Marable said. “People are kind of seeing us as a destination for craft beer.”
