Not to be outdone by the Flying Squirrels, a Richmond pro soccer team is unveiling its own team beer.

The Richmond Kickers last week announced their official brew: “Kick It Hunny” by Wild Wolf Brewing Co. It’s a blend the Kickers settled on after visiting the Nelson County brewery in January to taste Wild Wolf’s offerings.

“The beer that scored the best was a beer called Blonde Hunny,” team spokesman Hunter Leemon said of Wild Wolf’s 6.8 percent alcohol by volume flagship brew. “We were looking to do something that wasn’t quite so powerful but played off of that.”

"Kick It Hunny" will be about 4.5 percent alcohol by volume.

The final product will be a roughly 4.5 percent alcohol by volume beer that the Kickers characterize as “Belgian-American session pale ale.” The team is holding a contest for fans to design its official logo, Leemon said, and had received two submissions by Monday afternoon.

Wild Wolf’s local distributor, Loveland Distributing, set up the Kickers deal. There were no sponsorship deals or monetary considerations involved for either the brewery or the team. Wild Wolf owner Mary Wolf said the process for brewing and getting these specialty beers to market is just like the one used for any other beer.

Wild Wolf has done specialty beers for the Richmond Folk Festival and Capital Ale House’s 10th anniversary. Wolf said their work on those projects made her company a good fit to take on the Kickers beer.

“It’s a fun way to do things,” she said. “They come and they participate in the brewing, they participate in the pre-planning or both – it’s a little more personal instead of just cranking the same beers each day.”

Kick It Hunny will make the Kickers the second local team to order up its own beer from a Central Virginia brewery. In December, the Flying Squirrels announced Chin Music, brewed by Center of the Universe Brewing in Ashland. It will debut at the team’s Fan Fest in March.

The Kickers plan to release their beer at an event before the team’s April 5 season opener. Kick It Hunny will be available at Kickers home games at City Stadium, as well as a handful of bars across Richmond, where Leemon hopes fans will pick it up during soccer’s biggest spectacle this summer.

“It’s a World Cup year, and it’s a neat way to work with the craft beer community,” he said.
