One of Richmond’s biggest law firms is increasing its presence in the Lone Star state.
McGuireWoods has opened a new office in Dallas, its third location in Texas, after luring a team over from a competitor.
Six attorneys from Patton Boggs, an international law firm also with a Dallas presence, joined McGuireWoods as partners, the firm announced Monday.
Tom Cabaniss, McGuireWoods’ managing partner in Richmond, said the firm had been looking for the right expansion opportunity in Dallas for many years.
Its growth in that market will likely continue. Cabaniss said the firm will look to bring on as many as nine to 14 associates at the Dallas office in the near future.
“The addition of this talented and entrepreneurial group is just the start of what we plan to accomplish in this important and vibrant region,” Cabaniss said.
The new office will offer legal services for debt and equity finance, intellectual property, litigation, fund formation, mergers and acquisitions and other practice areas.
Four of the new partners, Jon Finger, Akash Sethi, J. Kevin Boardman, and David McLean, joined McGuireWoods’ private equity teams, the firm said. The others, Darren W. Collins and Robert C. Hilton, specialize in intellectual property.
For now, the new partners have set up shop on McKinney Avenue in Dallas as the firm searches for a permanent space, Cabaniss said.
McGuireWoods employs 959 attorneys firm-wide, 227 of whom work in the Richmond headquarters at One James Center, the firm said.
McGuireWoods opened its other Texas offices — in Houston and Austin — in 2011.
