An Eastern Virginia beer distributor is buying its way into the Richmond area.
Chesbay Distributing has inked an agreement to acquire Kozak Beverages, a Petersburg-based distributor that handles MillerCoors, Corona, Heineken and several smaller brands in a territory stretching from southern Chesterfield County to the North Carolina border.
“They have a wonderful and a great portfolio,” said Chesbay spokesperson Molly Reilly. “We love representing the brands we have, and Kozak is in a contiguous market to us. Their market touches one end of our market– that makes it easy and makes it make sense.”
The two parties signed the agreement Tuesday night, Reilly said, and the deal is expected to close by the end of next month. Chesbay, headquartered in Chesapeake, is buying Kozak’s business and the company’s building at 1201 Commerce St. in Petersburg. It will continue to operate out of the property under the Chesbay name.
Both sides declined to disclose financial terms of the sale.
Chesbay is a subsidiary of Reyes Beverage Group, an Illinois-based food and beverage distribution holding company.
Kozak Beverages has been operating in southern Virginia for about 26 years. The company opened in 1988, co-owner Marcella McGuigan said, after acquiring B & H Distributing Co.
McGuigan and her husband renamed the company Kozak Beverages as a nod to Kozak Distributing, a distributor McGuigan’s parents had previously owned in suburban Detroit.
Kozak’s portfolio is highlighted by the MillerCoors brand, which includes all Miller, Coors, Blue Moon and Leinenkugel’s products. The distributor also carries Sam Adams, Yuengling and Williamsburg’s Aleweks Brewing Co.
Chesbay plans to bring on much of Kozak Beverages’ current staff, including Kozak’s current general manager. But as their company folds into Chesbay, McGuigan said she and her husband won’t be coming with it.
“We are going into retirement and looking forward to sort of starting a new chapter in our lives,” she said. “We are grandparents of three grandsons – young grandsons – so we’re looking forward to spending a lot of time with them.”
