It’s gotten easier to get adventurous in the West End.
Last month GreenLife Adventure Sports opened its first Richmond location at 9691 W. Broad St. in the West Park Shopping Center. The 2-year-old retailer’s only other location is in Norfolk, which Tommy Dunn opened in 2012.
“We’ve been super well-received by Richmond as a whole,” Dunn said. “Just recently with the weather changing, we’ve seen a lot of people coming in for Patagonia fleece jackets.”
GreenLife sells outdoor apparel, footwear and other gear. Matt Hayden operates the 5,000-square-foot Richmond store and owns a small percentage of GreenLife.
Dunn said it cost about $250,000 of his personal savings to get the Richmond GreenLife open. The space had previously been home to a Hallmark shop before it closed in May. GreenLife leased the space in April.
Broker Jim Ashby of Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer handles leasing for West Park Shopping Center and said it is fully occupied.
“It was 70 percent leased when I took over in 2011,” Ashby said.
Anchored by a Martin’s, West Park also added Capitol Granite as a tenant in May. It’s the kitchen and bathroom designer and installer’s third location.
Dunn said GreenLife will focus on getting its Richmond location up and running before thinking about adding more locations.
“Richmond is such a big, vibrant market I think the sky’s the limit here,” he said.
