Quick-handed chefs and steaming onion trains have arrived in a West End shopping center.
Hayashi Sushi and Grill, a new restaurant at 2610 John Rolfe Parkway in John Rolfe Commons Shopping Center, opened for business Jan. 15.
Owner Lenny Sean spent about $500,000 to renovate the former Max and Erma’s space into his third Hayashi location, joining its other outposts in Hampton and Newport News.
The 6,300-square-foot restaurant is divided into different areas depending on dining style. There is a section for a bar, a sushi bar, traditional dining and hibachi grill.
Maryland-based KCC Engineering did the design and build of the space that can fit 130 people. Renovations took about five months and included installing six hibachi grills that are self-ventilating. Twelve taps are slated to be installed for the bar.
“I’m happy with how it turned out,” Sean said. “Right now, I’m focused on quality control.”
Sean has a 10-year lease for the property. Richmond real estate firm The Wilton Cos. owns the space.
Sean said the average dinner price is about $20 per person. Hayashi will hold a grand opening Jan. 28.
Richmond may be due for another Hayashi location, but Sean said he would probably wait a year before expanding again.
